Cold Weather Advice

Today the temperature is currently -6 so here is some useful tips of how to stay safe in the cold

Home advice

Check on family, friends and neighbours who are at risk and may need additional assistance.

Check that elderly neighbours have food, milk and medicines and if not offer to collect it for them.

Check that they’re safe and well and that they are warm enough, especially at night

If you’re worried about a relative or elderly neighbours, contact your local council or the Age UK helpline on 0800 678 1174 8am-7pm every day

Watch pets closely and keep them indoors when possible. Animals can suffer from hypothermia, frostbite and other cold weather injuries.

Motor Vehicle advice

Ensure you check your fuel, oil and water levels, check electrics and make sure your tyres have sufficient tread before setting out.

Check your lights and brakes are working effectively, including the handbrake and the fog lamps.

Ensure your heaters are working and you have added antifreeze to your radiator and windscreen washers.

Please allow extra time during winter weather and keep a closer eye on pedestrians, cyclist and horse riders and take extra care when making journeys.

Check the engine before driving to make sure no cats or other animal have climbed in to stay warm
